Why don’t the lights and AC work when I walk into my hotel room?
The problem
Lights and AC don’t work when you walk into your hotel room.
The fix
Look for the key card slot on the wall by the door and put your room card in it: it switches the room’s power on. Take the card out and the power goes off after a short delay. If nothing happens, ask reception, as some slots only accept that hotel’s own cards.

- Key card switch (manufacturer datasheet)
The key card switch acts as the main electrical switch for the room; lighting and heating only work once a card is in it; when the card is removed the circuits stay powered for a set delay, from 10 seconds to 5 minutes, so you can leave safely.
- Key card energy-saving switch (manufacturer)
Some key card switches can be set to work only with a card that belongs to that hotel or room.
- Patent US6487884B1: electrically controlled lock
How an electronic hotel lock works: a valid key powers an actuator that engages a clutch so the handle can retract the latch. This is what the drawing shows.
