Thailand's tourism picture is mixed. International visitor numbers are again coming in below earlier hopes, yet the supply of hotel rooms and airline seats keeps growing. Developers and carriers are proceeding with their plans even as the outlook for arrivals softens.

The government has reduced its forecast for 2026 international arrivals from 36.7 million to 33 million. For 2027, it is aiming for at least 33 million, carrying this year's more modest expectation into the following year. These revised targets sit awkwardly alongside the continued expansion of rooms and seats, and they raise questions about whether the new capacity matches the demand that is actually materialising.

The impact is not spread evenly across the country. Upscale hotels in Bangkok are performing more strongly than expected, while Phuket is absorbing a large wave of new openings. The overriding question is whether steady demand from wealthier travellers and from newer source markets can generate the returns that investors are hoping for.

What it means for travellers from India

  • A bigger supply of rooms and flights can translate into more choice and, at times, more competitive pricing, especially in places where new supply is arriving quickly, such as Phuket.
  • Bangkok's stronger luxury segment suggests that premium stays in the city may stay in firmer demand, so availability at the higher end may be tighter.
  • Because the government is lowering its forecast rather than raising it, there is no signal of a sudden jump in crowds, which may suit travellers who prefer calmer trips.
